Getting dressed for exercise when you’re breastfeeding can be a bit of a conundrum.

If you’re going along to a class to which you can take your baby, chances are you’ll need to pop him on the boob at some point (or three) and that can be tricky if you’re all trussed up in sports’ gear. Even worse when it’s hot and the last thing you need is too many layers.

But don’t skip the fitness session. There are loads of options.

Here’s a few tips we’ve picked up along the way for the best ways to workout and feed baby without too much fuss.

Best in Bras

Happily, us ladies all come in different shapes and sizes. But that does mean there is absolutely no one-size fits all guideline when it comes to what bras work best for feeding and exercising.

A nursing sports bra in the right size is a good start though and will make an exercise session with baby so much more doable. Below are some of the options on the market.

Top Tops

Top options really depend on boob size and body shape too. Some of us have bigger boobs and are worried about them spilling out, while others want to cover the tummy area or both. But here’s some suggestions for workout gear that should help keep you comfy and covered in all the right places.

Breastvest is pretty clever. It’s good for those early exercise classes when you might not be up for flashing your tummy. Wear it with a nursing sports bra and a loose vest or t-shirt over the top for easy feeding. You can then just lift your nice loose top, un-clip the bra and then let your top drop back down around your boob for coverage once baby is guzzling.

A loose vest is a good option for warmer classes and as the Breastvest has to upper element we love think this Nike option below would be great over the top. A slightly bigger size than normal might make it a little more breastfeeding-friendly as you’ll have extra material to fall back down over the chest area for coverage. But the elastic straps and dipped back will mean it’s super accessible and will keep you cool.

We also love this H&M option below. It’s nice and loose and does a similar job.

These Verbaudet options below have been tried and tested by a Jelly Belly team member. They’re not strictly sports tops but that doesn’t matter. They are super loose, forgiving and perfect for breastfeeding on the go.

If you’re not looking for an up and down option and just want one item then Boobdesign.com has a brilliant range of nursing activewear.

It’s not always so warm, especially in the UK of course, so this activewear fleece, also from Boob Designs is fab for working out with baby on chillier days.

The two vests option is by far one of the best for nursing while you’re working out. This is a great combination from H&M: Choose something like this closer fitted orange vest (make sure it’s stretchy enough for you to pull it down to access your bra) then wear the looser white vest over the top. The bottom vest comes down, the top one comes up for feeding. And you should still be pretty cool on warmer days.

Stay Comfy

Go with loose workout trousers if you can.

They make plopping yourself down to feed so much easier and more comfy. Plus looser and lighter is a much better option for warmer months.
